Ashok pillar signal, Chennai - No Free Left Turn board |
In India, Most of the cities, Roads are designed mainly for vehicles movement only. Like this in Chennai, at Very very few places, there is a sign board stating " NO FREE lfet turn " for Vehicles. Mostly they are giving just 10 secs for pedestrians to cross. Even a fully fit individual has to literally run to cross the road within this tine gap. Imagine the plight of physically challenged , visually impaired to cross these busy junctions. Though Policemen man some of the signals for the violation but most of the places, Vehicles drivers and riders violate the time and space of pedestrians.
Responsible Citizens iYakkam sees road safety of pedestrians as a direct barometer for measuring the safety of marginalized people of the society. If a city or a country takes care of their pedestrians naturally law & order & Crime rates are quite low in that society.
India can be declared as a developed country only when all its pedestrians not just human beings, but also dogs, cats , cows can use the road safely.
Many unwanted things we copy from western countries, most important thing we need to copy is the respect for pedestrian crossing. A vehicle will not move an inch when a pedestrian is crossing even though they have some cars which can cruise at 200 KMPH.
So in all roads :
1. Free Left turn has to be banned in every road.
2. For every 2 minutes of Vehicles time in signal, 30 full seconds have to be earmarked for pedestrian crossing only
4. Over taking the buses by its left side harms the alighting passengers.
All responsible Vehicle drivers have to respect & stop for pedestrians. A responsible society can happen only when we care for each other.
Good message. On other side Pedestrians should use zebra crossing instead of crossing wherever they like. Also traffic department should provide crossing symbols at signal points.Where there is no zebra crossing at all in places, then where do pedestrians cross at all?
ReplyDeleteSignals should be in workable condition and to be monitored. When signals don't work we see a chaotic conditions in the roads.
